Small observations,
collected slowly.
Northwind Field Notes is a quiet place for short pieces about walking, weather, and the craft of noticing. No feeds, no metrics — just a page you can read in the time it takes a kettle to boil.
About
I kept a paper notebook for a year — one page per walk, dated in the corner, weather scribbled at the top. This site is the digital shelf that notebook lives on. Entries stay short on purpose; the point isn't to say a lot, it's to say the right small thing.
Everything here is hand-written HTML and a single stylesheet. No trackers, no cookie banner, nothing to accept or dismiss.

The colour of rain on slate
After a warm week the first proper rain fell and the roofs across the valley went the shade of a wet river stone — somewhere between violet and graphite, depending on where you stood.
-
Crows, and what they choose to shout about
Two of them argued for a full minute over a chip bag, then flew off together as if the argument had never happened. Something to learn from, probably.
-
A short defence of the slow walk
Walking slowly is the cheapest way I know to make a familiar street unfamiliar again. Nothing new arrives; you just start to see what was already there.
Colophon
Set in your browser's native serif and sans (whatever those happen to be — likely Georgia and system-ui). Layout is a single column on phones, two on wider screens, with plenty of room for the words to breathe.

Say hello
If a note reminded you of something, that's the best possible outcome. Replies are welcome at hello@example.com — I read everything, eventually.
